CHAPTER XXVIII: OK, TWO IS FINE FOR GUM, BUT...

Two. Shit. But then suddenly it hit me.

"Wait, he has called you HERE to brag too. Weren't those calls recorded?" I asked.

Rob grinned.
"Another point to my baby. Yes of course they were. Let me go and see if I can find them. They are noted and dated."

He did and we waited anxiously and after about twenty minutes Rob came back and said he had found what he was looking for, checked, and they sounded the same. He was gonna have Forensics do a voice match but...it looked good.

"HOORAY!"

Drat.

Ok, I have talked already about Johnny Chase and his looks. I have not talked about him other than that and when you are searching for a killer the more you know about the suspects the better. So, I called the local school administration offices and asked for Johnny's records. (I later did for his father as well).

According to school records, when he deigned to show up that is, he was an A+ student. Anti-social to say the least not hanging out with anyone or any group in particular. Kept to himself, and his teachers said he was almost abnormally bright. Shame all that going to waste, for he didn't come to school on a regular basis and hadn't since grade school. He always sat at the back of the room and acted annoyed when called on by a teacher but when he did homework and turned it in every teacher said it was above average quality and showed flair and tremendous creativity.

This from someone who to all appearances seemed totally self-destructive.

Johnny's father we knew zilch about except for what Katie had told us. He had never been arrested on so much as a parking ticket. Like Johnny he had shown flair and a creative bent as a student but also missed school a lot of the time, acted totally detached when he did show up and was a loner.

So, like father like son and we suspected that Johnny's grandfather would prove the same. Katie had been a fair to above average student, was a popular student all through school, and married right out of high school..where she had been close to the honor roll often.

ALL THAT TALENT and smarts, and all of it being wasted.
